HIT em up Feat. Yoge & Fizal Stars (Blockstar Music)
On Friday the 13th, I visited Calabash Bistro for the first time to enjoy an evening of Golden Era Hip-Hop spun by the likes of DJ Tanner and Rhek. As my troop approached the Carrall & Pender locale, a friend of mine quickly became apprehensive because the DTES street personnel was as thick and seedy as a jerk marinade. Oh shit, did I forget to mention that Calabash Bistro has a “Reggaecentric Environment” and specializes in “Caribbean Cuisine?” Well, it is and they do!
Straight up, I had a great time at this establishment. Where most pubs will shut down their kitchens at 11pm, Calabash keeps theirs cooking right until 2am. Being able to order a steamed seafood platter and fried fish dish at such an hour puts them into my good book. And as busy as it was, our waiter still showed us incredible care and attention with drinks and hot sauce.
Their menu is huge and they also have weekly specials (pictured above). I can’t wait to return and try the ackee and saltfish. Also, I’m saving up $200 for a sick Method Man painting I saw on the wall.
Head on over to their great website and browse their offerings of food, drinks and shows.
One of the things I love about going to Vegas is the fact that I’m out of the country long enough to come back thru the border from Bellingham to get cheap booze. This time I was sold on a flooring Patron 4-pack for $89. Seriously, British Columbian liquor laws are so fuck’n archaic.
Anyways, the taste test. Patron is a luxury brand of tequila produced in Mexico made from 100% Blue Agave and introduced to pimps, hustlaz and ballers everywhere in 1989. To accompany me on this sampling, I put together a panel of quasi-intelligent drunks and wannabe porn stars.
Lizzy Balaclava
Bar Wench
So far consumed 3 beers, 2 vodkas, 1/2 bottle of wine.
Jorge Posada
Catcher, NY Yankees
Drank a Coors and a Carlsberg Export.
Lynn Discovery aka Lucky Lager
Stained Glass Sculpturist.
Took 3 doses of Vitamin P (Pilsner).
Bizoid “Stanley Wong” Sanchez
Coffee Pimpologist
Drank 2 espressos with a Coors chaser.
1. Patron Silver
Lizzy – “Tequila-y! Smooth, needs no chaser!”
Jorge – “Smooth, classic tequila, very high-end Mexican.”
Lynn – “Goosebumps, shivers, tastes like tequila, needs lime but not salt.”
Bizz – “So smooth, forgot I needed lime, ok, goosebumps, I’ll get some lime and salt now.”
*break to cut lime wedges and pour salt.
2. Patron Anejo (aged)
Lizzy – “Less smooth, more chokey, still good but needs salt.”
Jorge – “Deeper, goldier taste. Real Mexican type shit.”
Lynn – “Salt used. Tasted more like Cuervo. My brows are still furrowed. Much stronger than silver. Tasted cheap.”
Bizz – “Muskier. Woodsier. Tastes mo’ bitter like most gold tequilas, I guess.”
3. Patron Reposado (oak aged)
Lizzy – “I feel like it has been a downgrade. Perhaps it’s Gold, Silver and Bronze?”
Jorge – “Lighter than previous. Still a classic Mexican blast. Would mix well.”
Lynn – “I can smell it already. Feels cheap in my stomach. The back of my throat is slightly numb. Does not taste deluxe/premium! What are you?”
Bizz – “Yup, roof of my mouth is numb. Tastes most like rubbing alcohol. Ok, now my whole mouth is numb. I thought this was supposed to be orange flavoured.”
*break to youtube Beyonce and Lady Gaga in Videophone and then Telephone, both drooling and repulsion ensued.
4. Patron X.O. Cafe (coffee)
Lizzy – “Wow!!! Yummy!!! Surprisingly good! Ok, so, like Van Gogh but waay better…cuz it’s tequila and patron!”
Jorge – “Sweet smell of coffee mixed with the nectar of the state of Jalisco. Great mixture. Me love it long time. Mexican’s can not afford this nectar. Fuckem, we’ll drink it for them.”
Lynn – “Smells delicious! You are so yummy. Smooth. Coffee. No tequila taste. I will drink it! Too smooth.”
Bizz – “Thick, syrupy, more coffee flavourings than Van Gogh Double Espresso vodka. Virtually no tequila taste. Holy shit, this Telephone video is really long.”
Final thoughts?
Lizzy – “<3<3<3 Silver Patron/Coffee Patron!"
Jorge – “XO Cafe was awesome, great taste. Very Poncho Villa meets Juan Valdez. But Silver takes the prize for straight shooting. Just like in a border town like Juarez. Patron Reposado is great for mixing or living like a lazy Mexican.”
Lynn – “I enjoyed the silver and the coffee but will not retry the anejo or reposado. They hurt my soul. Anejo and reposado tasted like the rejects.
Bizz – “Silver was hands down the best. It’s the only one they serve in bars, which makes sense. Pretty stoked to have tried the coffee too as it’s unavailable in Canada. Gonna lock up that bottle for sure. Gotta a good buzz going, let’s head to Calabash.”
